Who Volunteers? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dolly Reynoso

People volunteer in order to help other people in needs. They also volunteer in order to "give back" to the community. This means that they want to help the people in their community who need help. However, volunteering is not only good for the community and those in need but it is good for the volunteers too.

Who volunteers? All kinds of people volunteer. For example, senior citizens volunteer for many reasons, to meet new friends and stay active. In addition, senior citizens often have a lot of free time. They can use their time to help other people. Sometimes, when people graduate from college, they do volunteer work. Then they can get some skills and experience before they find a job.

As a foreign worker and as a cultural exchange volunteer for UNESCO-Korea (an organization designed for providing Korean students with knowledge not only of specific cultures but more for sharpening their thoughts and attitudes in favor of cultural diversity and open-mindedness), volunteering to this kind of organization gives me the opportunity to do something different. It gives me the chance to understand the Korean culture and to adjusts to its system of education. Informing the Korean students about the Philippines as a country of warm and hospitable people with a lot of tourist spots to offer isn't just enough. I learned to dig deep into my country's rich cultural heritage and learned to convey the truth about the Modern Filipinos of today, their failures, aspirations and victories as well. And the more I became knowledgeable of the subject, the more the love and the pride for my country overflows.

There are many existing Pinoy organizations in the Filipino community here in Seoul, South Korea. All exist with the objectives of helping our needy "kababayans" on matters concerning deportation, health problems, death, accidents and abuses. Extending financial aids to our needy "kababayans" isn't a big problem at all. Thanks to those active volunteers who never stop finding ways on how they can accumulate funds through various fund-raising projects.

Volunteers do different work , but they have something in common and that is, to help other people. And by helping other people, they are helping themselves, too. So, what are you waiting for? This site needs YOU! All we need is a little of your time, effort and a soft heart to extend whatever means you can share to make this site be of great help and joy to our dear kababayans from anywhere in the world. Let us make this site a pride for all the Sariayahins.

I'm calling all those concerned kababayans to make "SARIAYA.net" a friendly place to meet new friends, find our long lost friends online through the "Kamustahan Forum". Stay in touch and get involved through writing articles in the newest "Sariaya Online Community Magazine."

Be a volunteer and see the difference, start now, start it here! SARIAYA.net is just a click

Discover Sariaya

Sariaya Church

The town of Sariaya had its simple beginning almost four hundred years ago in a place near the sea, what is now called the Barangay of Castañas. The first inhabitants of the place where the hardy and brown fishermen and who upon the arrival of the Franciscan Friars were the first converts. With the help of the early inhabitants, who are mostly fishermen, the Franciscan Missionaries were able to build a church, entrusted under the patronage of St. Francis of Assisi. Because the fishing village was often attacked by the Moros, the people moved northward of Castañas and settled in this place. About three kilometres from this second site, the people once again settled in another place which at present bear the name known as Barangay Tumbaga, also known as Lumang Bayan. A church and convent were erected at Tumbaga as a proof of their religious interest and filial regard to their spiritual mentors, the Franciscan friars.
