New Sariaya leadership takes the oath. Mayor Rosauro V. Masilang was sworn into office in simple rites at the Sariaya Sports Center on Saturday, June 30, 2007, after a 6 am mass at the Saint Francis of Assisi Parish Church. With his mother Mrs. Ada Villones V. de Masilang., wife Rowena and their three children by his side, he thanked everyone for all the support that earned him the right and honor to serve as Chief executive of Sariaya for the next three years. He then reached out for those who thought otherwise and enlisted their help in working hand in hand for the future of the town.

Acknowledging the great responsibility handed to him by the mandate, he elaborated on the putting up of a "People’s Consultative Council" so that everybody can participate and share in his transparent leadership of a new Sariaya.

Riding on the crest of his campaign slogan "Kagalingang Panglahat", he said that the start of his job will be a professional and apolitical "back to the barracks" scheme of putting the House (Municipio) in order, without prejudice to the basic services.

Mayor Boyet vowed to alleviate the water problem and institute reforms on taxation, most especially in the business sector, to attract much-needed investments into the local economy. He promised effective regulation measures for quarrying, as well as the rehabilitation and reforestation of denuded areas, so that Sariaya will never be another Ormoc. He challenged the local PNP to do their best to assure a good peace and order situation, an important necessity for progress.

Among his other priorities will be beneficial programs for health, nutrition, family welfare, education and sports for all Sariayahins. Also high on his agenda will be the putting up of schools for technical and vocational courses, wherein the graduates will receive endorsements from the local government for employment to electronics companies in Metro Manila and nearby provinces. He will actively push for a comprehensive school computerization program, to ensure computer literacy among the students.

Amid all the applause, he enlisted the cooperation of the rank and file municipal employees, fellow elected officials and all Sariayahins in the pursuit of his goal for a new and progressive Sariaya with his battle cry, "Arya Sariaya".

Also sworn into office were Vice Mayor Romualdo Nonato L. Nantes, and the eight Sangguniang Bayan members namely Oliver C. Villapando, Alex Tolentino Sr., Haydee M. Caringal, Minerva R. Remo, Gerardo Q. Abril, Jeffrey M. Mayuga, Alfredo A. Joven and Margarita V. Montero.

Intermission numbers were provided by the Saint Joseph’s Academy students, Sariaya East Central School teachers, Sariaya West Elementary School teachers and Canda National High School students. Refreshments were served for all the people who filled the Sariaya Sports Center. The proceedings were broadcast live locally over the Sariaya Cable Network (SCAN).

Sariaya Industries

Industries: The people’s main sources of livelihood range from land and sea agricultural cultivation to home industries which have lately taken a turn toward the export-oriented light to heavy industries, with the planning and construction of economic zones. The major economic activity and source of income for the people of Sariaya is agriculture. It is a palay and coconut producing region of the province, a cottage industry center and at present a growing tourist spot. Agricultural activities include rice farming, kopra making, banana coffee vegetables and root crop planting. The coconut industry is the number peso earner in Sariaya, however existing price trend and instability of the product had caused the majority of the populace to suffer from economic dislocation and imbalance. This fact compels the people to divert to other means of livelihood such as agro-livestock, cottage industry and fishing, which are, at present, boosting the town’s economy substituting the declining copra industry.
